Compared with EMT and IMC, its larger cataloged wall thickness and threaded connection system make it the deliberate selection where physical protection and a robust raceway are more important than minimizing conduit weight.

The selection decision is not only the trade size. Buyers should also confirm the applicable project standard, thread form, coupling configuration, finish, length, and the current controlled TDS. Do not substitute RMC and IMC solely because their nominal sizes appear similar.

Heavy-wall steel construction provides a more substantial physical raceway than lighter conduit types.
